• Mild Steel – coated and/or painted to prevent corrosion
• Stainless Steel – of appropriate grade to resist corrosion

• PVC-coated polyester fabric –with PVDF lacquer to provide UV stability

Designs

Unlike more Conventional methods of construction, the design of tension structures is more complex & time-consuming. While design cannot be reduced to a strict linear process it can be summarized as a sequence of four broad stages:

• Form-finding
• Membrane Analysis
• Support Structures Analysis
• Patterning

Because of the high loads that must be collected & taken out into the surrounding structures, or the ground, tensioned fabric canopies are not particularly low-cost.

Cost

• As a very rough rule of thumb fabric structures are nearly always cheaper than planar glazing and more expensive than polycarbonate solutions.
• They really come into their own in large span structures where the ratio of fabric to steel results in considerable savings over more conventional structures.
• Small structures, under 100 sq.meters, can be relatively expensive since they tend to be design intensive.
